Welcome to South Boston
This very traditional Massachusetts community offers an expansive waterfront
One of Boston’s oldest and most traditional communities, this desirable residential neighborhood, fondly dubbed “Southie” by locals, is densely populated and somewhat synonymous with Irish American pride. Long considered a haven for the working class, most recently gaining popularity with Millennial professionals, the landscape here is beautiful, with long stretches of beaches and a historic waterfront park situated along Dorchester Bay. Hotels, restaurants, gastropubs, and taverns are located within South Boston’s heart.
Convenient and filled with lots of amenities, real estate here is desirable — many turn-of-the-century Victorians have been flipped and divided into condos, most with million-dollar price tags. There are still many quaint rowhouses situated among posh cafés and gourmet markets.
Home to the city’s famed St. Patrick's Day Parade, which draws Irish revelers from around the world, Southie also maintains some big-screen fame, serving as the backdrop for blockbuster films such as The Departed and Good Will Hunting.
Residents fervently love the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins, and the area, predominantly populated by families and young professionals, is heavily defined by its strong sense of community.
Nightlife is big in this neighborhood: at The Broadway, a casual, modern neighborhood hangout, you’ll find comfort eats, wood-fired pizzas, craft beers, and shareable cocktails. A small, family-owned, and locally famous spirits shop, Social Wines offers a unique selection from obscure winemakers, nano- and micro-brewers, and small-batch distillers. Lots of small pubs and casual eateries are sprinkled throughout: Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar, a funky neighborhood taqueria located on West Broadway, specializes in tacos, oysters, and tequila.
There are lots of excellent schools in South Boston. Top educational opportunities include Joseph P. Tynan Elementary School, serving children in PK-5; South Boston Catholic Academy for K-6; and Excel High School, a mid-size college preparatory high school that fosters high academic achievement and creative expression.
